Physical Activity Breaks

Supervisors and managers can create a healthy work culture by encouraging employees to be physically active. Incorporating just 5 to 10-minutes of physical activity at the start of a meeting with some standing and/or stretching exercises, or taking the stairs during breaks, is a great way to start building an active lifestyle. Check our the tips below for promoting a physically active workforce.

Standing Breaks

Sit less and stand up more to keep your body moving. Promote standing up from a desk and rotating positions every 30 minutes. How can you get started on incorporating standing breaks into your daily routine?

  • At least once an hour, stand up and move for three to four minutes. March in place, walk to the printer, restroom, or other side of the office, or walk down the hall and talk to a co-worker.

  • Encourage employees to fit fitness into their busy day. Check out LIVEwell’s tips on how to incorporate physical activity into a busy work day!

Stretch breaks have many advantages including waking up the body and mind, increasing flexibility and blood flow, reducing discomfort and tension, and calming your mind. How can you get started on incorporating stretch breaks into your daily routine?

Walking Breaks

Walking doesn’t require any equipment and short walks count as physical activity too! How can you get started on incorporating walking breaks into your daily routine?

  • Start a walking group - Walking groups are a fun and easy way to build physical activity into your day! Grab a few coworkers and take a walk around the building or map out a route and commit to walking that route during your break.

  • Walk and talk meetings - Incorporate wellness into your team meetings by doing a walk and talk meeting instead of a typical sit-down meeting.

  • Take the stairs - Small steps can make a big difference! Try taking the stairs instead of the elevator whenever you can (arriving and leaving work and to and from meetings). Download LIVEwell’s Take the Stairs flyer to post in your office or email to your employees!
